Located next to Walt Disney World, the city of Kissimmee was founded in the mid-19th century. It is located on the shores of Lake Tohopekaliga, and is the seat of Osceola County, Florida. The small town benefited economically during the last years of the 19th century thanks to a drainage operation in the territory of southern Florida that used the area near the city as a base. The opening of Walt Disney World in 1971 brought a real economic renaissance.
The city also includes several modern sports complexes, like the Osceola County Softball Complex. Activities in the surroundings range from cruises through the lake, to visits to the Kennedy Space Center.
